October 2024 Summary: This edition highlights key developments in animal rights and environmental laws in India. We start with the #JusticeForJai campaign, which has raised calls for stronger laws under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Amendment) Bill, 2022, including tougher penalties and recognition of community animal rights. We then explore the Bharata Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), a new approach to replacing the Indian Penal Code's provisions on animal rights. While it improves certain protections, gaps remain in addressing sexual violence against animals. Our focus shifts to the Draft Remediation of Contaminated Sites Rules, 2024, which aims to tackle hazardous waste management in India by enforcing site clean-ups and accountability. Finally, we revisit the Jallikattu debate, analyzing legal battles over this traditional sport's revival in Tamil Nadu and the challenges of balancing cultural heritage with animal welfare.
